Historically, I’ve tended to be a bit of a bah humbug around Christmas. I love the food fairs and the Baileys and the erruption of twinkling lights, but the commercial culture of the holiday and this ingrained pressure to spend spend spend gives me the ick. When I was younger I couldn’t understand why my grandparents said they didn’t want any gifts – how could there not be something? – but I get it now; despite good intentions, I think we’ve all had that moment where we’re looking down at a random body set or pair of gloves and think ‘well, what am I going to do with this now?’. It’s a waste of money, of time, of packaging and materials.
I do appreciate, however, that gift giving is a lovely gesture, and for some, this may be the only time of year to invite a little indulgence. With that in mind, I’ve collected an assortment of gift ideas from sustainable and/or independent brands, the likes of which will hopefully offer you some alternatives to the big high street names who go all in on the festive advertising. Excessive consumption goes into overdrive this time of year but with just an inkling of care, you can still shop consciously.
There aren’t a ton of ideas to be found here. I’ve included many things I own or have gifted to others, plus some others I’d love to receive or think would make a bloody good present, but including hundreds upon hundreds of products would be counterproductive to the shop slowly mindset. So I hope you see something that sparks a little ‘a-ha! this is it’ moment in your brain, whether that’s postal bakes from an independent baker or an eco vibrator with multiple, joyful settings.
Enjoy!
