A few that never got to see the light of day. 📸 If you’re someone who enjoys taking photos to keep, relishing the process of recording small moments as not to forget them forever, you will know the precise pleasure of getting lost in old folders. Remembering who you were with, what you ate, what music was flooding through your headphones. Whether you were content or pursuing something new, something which now feels normal. It’s like a collector admiring their gains, digging through forgotten photos. Such a distinct and nostalgic delight.

We’ve been doing more Q&As recently and there’s been a common thread running through the submissions, whether long-form or short, of feeling like you aren’t doing things at the right time or the right way.

Listen: you are on your own timeline. Do things the right way for you. We touched upon this earlier in the week, but ‘taking a step back’ does not exist, it’s just an idea, a visualisation of an imaginary path. Every day you take a ‘step forward’ simply by waking up and living your life. You’re fucking do it baby!!!! You’re doing it right now.

These markers we measure ourselves by are so empty and we know this because any time something truly awful happens to someone, they are clear about what really matters: relationships with loved ones, the feeling of fulfilment. It’s a tale as old as time, the insights people share in their final moments about what they would have done differently (worked less, loved more).

Though we acknowledge this, it sometimes feels like we have to wait for something awful to happen to cement it into truth, and until that point we’ll keep punishing ourselves for not doing things the ‘right way’, even though we know that ultimately doing things the ‘right way’ would lead us away from our happiness, i.e. staying in a job that pays well even though we don’t like it, or getting married when we aren’t ready because that’s what a certain age expects.

I’m trying to not lose my train of thought and fall down a brain-spiral here but I just wanted to re-iterate, inspired by your Q&A questions:

Relax baby. You are on your own timeline. You decide the right way for you. I don’t need to tell you that a lot of this shit doesn’t matter because you already know, so give yourself the grace of TRUSTING YOURSELF and don’t let perceived pressures steer you away from the shape of your fulfilment. You might fuck it up. It might go wrong. But it won’t be fucked up or wrong forever, and you’ll move on and get over it and keep taking a step forward the way you’re doing right now. Trust yourself, trust yourself, trust yourself, and stop trusting people like me so much to tell you things about your own life that you already know.
